Do you know why most families don’t have a family picture? You might guess time? Or money? Or that they just don’t know where to go to get them done? While those are all great guesses, the #1 reason that most families don’t have a family picture is because of how Mom feels about herself. We feel fat, or ugly or old. We’ll do it when we lose ten pounds or get our hair done. Sometimes I wonder if we think that getting that family session done locks us into the person that we are in that image? Why is it so hard for us to see how beautiful we actually are?
Why are we women so hard on ourselves? I ask as a woman. I ask as a Mom. I ask as a photographer. I ask as a person who hates getting her picture taken. In fact, you’ll often hear me joke that I stay on “this side” of the camera. Why do we judge ourselves so harshly? I’m guilty. If you’re anything like me, you can think of 50 things right now you could change or make better about yourself. I only judge myself this way.
Part of my job (and, it is the best job in the world), is seeking out, even extracting the beauty in everything I see. Photography has changed my life. It’s changed my eyes and my brain. I think I’ve always seen the world from a different perspective (just ask my Mom, she’ll tell you how different I see things 🙂 ), but photography makes my very different perspective very real. Photography is a super-power. Photographers freeze time! Isn’t that essentially what all art is? A moment, feeling, idea, thought frozen in time through a painting, a song, a drawing, dance, sculpture, book.
Recently, I saw this Dove video circulating on Facebook and it really struck a cord with me. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend watching it! After you view it, call me. Let’s get your family pictures done. Give yourself and your family the gift of art, the gift of you…perfect, just as you are!
